fAMILY IN FOCUS - DAVE GIBBONS

Family in Focus delves into family archives, emphasising individuals' ties with their families and how these relationships have reflected and influenced their personal lives. It strives to tell a story through family images, providing a deeper contextual understanding of the photographed individual. Each interview begins with an image, and this later expands into broader and more detailed stories and experiences. Images help people hold onto memories, and they can also help trigger more memories. From this, we begin to uncover the stories and lives of those interviewed and will enable us to dwell in the words “I remember”.

This project was inspired by my personal family photo album, and from that, I was able to remember people and faces of passed loved ones and others who are still with me today, experiencing this encouraged me to provide and inspire this experience with others and guide them through their memories and life, exploring how far they have come and acknowledging how their past experiences and memories have shaped them today. The Black Mirror episode ‘Eulogy’ reflects my purpose for this project perfectly, as it explores the use of images to revive submerged memories and experiences. The directors, such as Nanette Burstein and Thora Birch, heavily inspired me. Their work engagingly tells stories without being too fast and leaving things to the imagination, and I aimed to achieve this, which I have successfully done by choosing not to include B-roll footage.
